@Ryan Hehe, it's all good ;) I actually get a kick out of obviously-not-designers telling me what to do (seems to be the trend, lately).

@Nick - Right. That's why you're the designer. I'm not going to stand over your shoulder and say "Hey, how about a little more padding-left on that list-item?"

Well, maybe I'm not speaking for myself, exactly, but I generally advise against it.

> Seriously, do you really think it’s going
> to matter in the end whether or not
> there’s just a little bit more whitespace
> around that heading?

Oh, it's going to matter. A lot.

Excellent post Ryan.

One more thing to do - and I may do a quick post about this.

Before you even do the pencil and pen thing (which is a HUGE must). I tend to start with a narrative.

For spot.us - I wrote the narrative of "Rita the reader" and "david the reporter" - and how they would both interact with the site.

From that - I started drawing. Tell the narrative that users would experience when they come to your site. If you can't tell that story, including all the choose your own adventure versions that your site can produce, you can't hire a developer.

YES! Pencil and paper! Especially graphing paper. This is how I conceptualized lots of my sites when I first started to teach myself HTML/site design. Although, I will admit that with the rise of templates, I've often ignored this now.

No. 2 and 3 are especially good.
